"There are a lot of people who care about this risk from advanced AI systems," Trazzi stated in an interview with Decrypt. "Having everyone marching together shows people are not isolated in thinking about this by themselves. There are a lot of people who care about this."

The proposal put forth by Stop the AI Race suggests that companies should refrain from building new "frontier models" – those representing the cutting edge of AI capabilities – and instead redirect their resources and efforts towards safety research. This call for a shift in focus is contingent on other major AI laboratories making similar credible commitments. This letter, released in the wake of ChatGPT’s public debut the previous year, demanded a moratorium on further advancements to leading AI tools. Trazzi articulated a stark warning about the current trajectory of AI development, describing the competitive rush as a "suicide race." He posited that the international and inter-company competition to achieve AI supremacy at breakneck speed is leading to a dangerous prioritization of speed over safety. "Even if you’re in China or any country in the world, nobody wants systems they cannot control," Trazzi asserted. "Because we’re in this race between companies and countries to build the systems as fast as possible, we’re taking shortcuts and cutting corners on safety. There is never a race that has no winners. What we have is a system we cannot control, and that’s why it’s called a suicide race."

The core of the protesters’ demand is not necessarily an outright ban on AI research but a conditional pause that allows for the development of robust safety protocols and international consensus. The Stop the AI Race proposal specifically calls for a halt to the development of new frontier models, advocating for a pivot towards ensuring the safety and controllability of existing and future AI systems. "If you limit how much compute a company can use to build these systems, then you’re pretty much limiting developing new models," he explained. "We want to talk to them, and we want them to talk to their leadership and have things moving from inside," Trazzi elaborated. He believes that employees, particularly those directly involved in the development process, can act as crucial agents of change. Whistleblowers, in particular, are seen as holding significant leverage because, as Trazzi noted, "they’re the ones building it." This approach suggests a belief that internal pressure from within the AI companies, amplified by external advocacy, could be a powerful catalyst for reform.
