XRP Now Accessible on Solana Through Wrapped Token Issued by Hex Trust

Bunga Citra Lestari, April 18, 2026

The prominent Ripple-linked cryptocurrency XRP has officially launched on the Solana blockchain, offering both individual users and institutional investors a new avenue to access and utilize the token. This integration is facilitated by a wrapped token, known as wXRP, issued by Hex Trust, a regulated digital asset custodian. The move significantly broadens XRP’s utility beyond its native XRP Ledger, opening up new possibilities within the rapidly expanding decentralized finance (DeFi) ecosystem on Solana and other compatible blockchains.

Bridging XRP to New Horizons: The Wrapped Token Initiative

The initiative, first publicly announced in December of the previous year, represents a strategic effort to enhance XRP’s interoperability and application within the broader cryptocurrency landscape. By enabling XRP to exist as a token on other major blockchains, the project aims to unlock its potential for activities such as market-making and participation in complex DeFi protocols. This expansion is particularly noteworthy given the substantial growth and established DeFi infrastructure present on blockchains like Solana and Ethereum.

As of the latest reports, a notable amount of XRP has already been converted into its wrapped form on Solana. Over 834,000 XRP tokens, valued at approximately $1.2 million at the time of activation, have been successfully wrapped and deployed onto the Solana network. This initial adoption signifies a tangible interest in leveraging XRP’s presence on a blockchain renowned for its high throughput and low transaction costs.

The mechanism behind wXRP involves a secure and regulated process managed by Hex Trust. Authorized users who wish to obtain wXRP first send their native XRP to Hex Trust’s custody services. Following the secure receipt of these funds, Hex Trust mints an equivalent amount of wXRP tokens on the target blockchain, which in this case is Solana. This process also extends to other blockchains compatible with the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM), including the Ethereum mainnet itself, as well as scaling solutions like Optimism and Layer 2 networks such as HyperEVM. For institutional investors looking to participate in this new offering, Hex Trust provides a registration process to gain early access to these features.

The DeFi Advantage: Leveraging Robust Ecosystems

The primary driver behind wrapping XRP onto platforms like Solana and Ethereum is to tap into their more developed and liquid DeFi ecosystems. The wXRP token, which is backed 1:1 by native XRP held in custody, can now be integrated into a wide array of decentralized applications (dApps) operating on these networks. This includes decentralized exchanges (DEXs), lending protocols, yield farming opportunities, and other financial instruments that are more abundant and mature on these alternative blockchains compared to the native XRP Ledger.

Data from DeFiLlama, a widely recognized analytics platform for decentralized finance, highlights the significant disparity in the size and depth of these ecosystems. Ethereum consistently ranks as the largest DeFi ecosystem, boasting a Total Value Locked (TVL) of approximately $57.2 billion. Solana follows in second place, with a TVL of around $6.08 billion. In stark contrast, the XRP Ledger currently ranks much lower in DeFi TVL, with figures around $51.46 million, placing it at approximately 41st position among DeFi ecosystems. This considerable difference underscores the strategic rationale for bringing XRP into more established DeFi environments, aiming to unlock greater economic activity and utility for the token.

Industry Perspectives and Future Outlook

The integration of XRP into broader blockchain ecosystems has been a long-anticipated development. Marcus Infanger, Senior Vice President at Ripple X, expressed enthusiasm for this initiative during its initial announcement in December. He stated, "There’s growing demand to use XRP across the wider crypto ecosystem and institutions, and so we are excited to see Hex Trust address this demand." The successful launch on Solana now provides the practical means for this demand to be met, allowing XRP holders and institutions to actively participate in DeFi on a leading layer-1 blockchain.

Beyond Solana, a substantial amount of wXRP has also been minted on the Ethereum blockchain. Approximately 50 million wXRP tokens, valued at around $74.5 million, have been created on Ethereum. A significant portion of these tokens has remained within a single Ethereum wallet since early November, predating the formal announcement of the wXRP initiative. This suggests a degree of preparation or early involvement from entities closely associated with the token issuer, potentially indicating a phased rollout or strategic deployment.

However, data from Etherscan, an Ethereum block explorer, indicates a relatively low level of on-chain activity for wXRP on Ethereum thus far. With fewer than 60 total transactions involving the wrapped token recorded since its inception, the current utilization on the Ethereum network appears to be nascent. This observation, coupled with the substantial amount minted, suggests that much of the wXRP on Ethereum may still be held in anticipation of broader adoption or integration into more active DeFi protocols.

A representative for Hex Trust did not immediately provide comment to Decrypt regarding the current activity and future plans for wXRP across these blockchains.

Market Performance and Context

The news of XRP’s expanded accessibility comes at a time when the token itself is experiencing moderate price action. In the 24 hours preceding the latest reports, XRP saw an increase of approximately 2%, trading hands at around $1.49. Despite this upward movement, the token remains significantly below its all-time high of $3.65, which was reached in July of the previous year. This price context is important as it highlights the potential for increased utility and adoption to influence future market dynamics for XRP.

The development also occurs against the backdrop of ongoing regulatory scrutiny and legal proceedings involving Ripple, XRP’s creator. While these external factors can influence market sentiment and adoption rates, the technological advancements in expanding XRP’s interoperability represent a distinct and positive development for the token’s ecosystem. The ability for XRP to function within established DeFi frameworks on major blockchains like Solana and Ethereum could, in the long term, contribute to increased demand and broader integration, irrespective of the outcome of legal challenges.

Implications for the Broader Ecosystem

The successful integration of XRP onto Solana and other EVM-compatible blockchains has several far-reaching implications:

  • Enhanced Liquidity and Utility: By becoming a token on more liquid blockchains, XRP can benefit from increased trading volume and a wider range of financial applications. This can lead to improved price discovery and more opportunities for users to earn yield or utilize XRP in various DeFi strategies.
  • Increased Institutional Adoption: The involvement of a regulated custodian like Hex Trust is crucial for facilitating institutional access. Wrapped tokens on established blockchains often meet a higher bar for compliance and security, making them more appealing to large-scale investors and financial entities.
  • Interoperability and Network Effects: This move fosters greater interoperability within the blockchain space. It demonstrates a commitment to connecting different blockchain networks, allowing assets to flow more freely and creating new network effects for both XRP and the blockchains it integrates with.
  • DeFi Innovation: The introduction of XRP into new DeFi ecosystems could spur innovation. Developers may create novel applications that leverage XRP’s unique characteristics, potentially leading to new financial products and services.
  • Competition and Market Dynamics: The expansion of XRP’s presence on competing blockchains could also influence market dynamics. It offers users more choices and potentially introduces new competitive pressures within the digital asset space.

The journey of XRP on Solana and Ethereum is still in its early stages. The initial volumes and transaction counts, particularly on Ethereum, suggest that widespread adoption will take time. However, the strategic groundwork laid by Hex Trust and Ripple X through this wrapped token initiative represents a significant step towards making XRP a more integrated and versatile asset within the global cryptocurrency landscape. The coming months will likely reveal the extent to which this new accessibility translates into tangible utility and economic activity across these prominent blockchain networks.
